      Image Description:
      MoS2 nanoclusters are used as a catalyst in the petrochemical industry for hydrotreating of crude oil to upgrade the feedstock and remove unwanted impurities such as sulfur. Without removal of sulfur the burning of the oil would lead to major environmental problems e.g. acid rain. The MoS2-based hydrotreating catalyst thus constitute one of the most important catalysts and has been used for decades, but only just recently, with the aid of STM, it was possible for the first time to reveal the atomic structure of the nanoclusters. The image is an atom-resolved STM image (7nm × 7nm) showing two triangular MoS2 nanoclusters on a Au(111) support. The highly resolved atoms on both the clusters and the Au support clearly demonstrated the power of STM to obtain detailed local information on an atomic level.

      Image Description:
      Conducting polymers are of great importance due to their interesting properties compared with other kind of microfabrication materials which make them very useful for electronics-based applications. One example of these polymers is polypyrrole (Ppy). The image presented reflects the growth of 2.5 um diameter polypyrrole rings by stamping an alkylthiol over a functionalized gold electrode surface using submerged microcontact printing technique (SuCP) defining a pattern, prior to the electrochemical growth of the polypyrrole (electropolymerisation). The height of all the Ppy rings is around 400 nm. With this technique we are able to have full control of the position, shape and size of the Ppy. The SuCP is used to define a pattern of a thiol monolayer which acts as passivation, between which the pyrrole solution is deposited, confining the electrochemical growth of Ppy to the areas coated with the thiol monolayer.       The traditional top-down fabrication methods of the microelectronics industry have been continuously refined to produce ever smaller devices, but are already facing serious difficulties in upholding the trend due to fundamental physical limits. Self-assembly of atoms and molecules on atomically well-defined crystal surfaces into artificial nanostructures provides a promising alternative route to even smaller functional systems. The atomically resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy image shows the topography of an array of self-assembled atomic gold chains fabricated via this bottom-up approach on a silicon surface. The spacing between adjacent chains is only 1.5 nm. Confinement of the electrons within a particular chain results in exotic electronic properties encountered only in one dimension.

      Image Description:
      One of the most promising routes to achieve new coating materials with hardness comparable to, or higher than, diamond is through thermodynamically-driven segregation of immiscible phases. An archetypical example of such system is nanocomposite (nc-) SiNx/TiN, which consists of a set of nanometer-sized TiN crystals embedded in an amorphous SiNx matrix, formed during spinodal decomposition of a Ti-Si-N alloy. This image shows a 23.6 nm x 20.4 nm area of a (NaCl structure) TiN(001) onto which SiNx has been deposited to a sub-monolayer coverage. The SiNx induces surface reconstruction into a mesh of wires, approximately 1 nm wide and 0.12 nm tall, oriented along <110> directions that span both the terrace and the central island. The island height is approximately 0.22 nm, corresponding well to the TiN(001) interplanar distance (0.212 nm). This image suggests that the structure of the internal SiNx/TiN interfaces in nc-SiNx/TiN may be much more complicated than previously thought.

      Image Description:
      Three-dimensional representation of a STM measurement (size: 12 nm x 9 nm, scanning parameters: U = 0.1 V, I = 100 pA, T = 7 K). The central part of the image shows a molecule-metal complex, precisely a hexa-tert-butyl-hexaphenylbenzene-Cu2 complex. The two copper atoms have been trapped with the molecule by means of STM manipulations, i.e. by sliding the molecule over single Cu adatoms. The six tert-butyl groups of the molecule give rise to the six visible bumps in the molecular image, while the apparent height of the central molecular part is determined by the number of trapped Cu atoms. Up to a total of six copper atoms can be trapped, moved, and released with one molecule. A few individual copper adatoms can be seen in the foreground of the image. Furthermore, standing wave patterns due to the Shockley surface state of the Cu(111) surface are visible. The standing wave patterns result from scattering of surface state electrons at molecules and adatoms.
